Director's Greeting

August 2011

Welcome to the Law & Technology Institute at the Schulich School of Law. Here you will find a forum for teaching, research, policy and consulting work at a vital cross-roads of law and public policy.

The Institute was founded by Professors Michael Deturbide and Teresa Scassa at the turn of the 21st century, in early recognition of today’s obvious truth—that technological developments challenge society’s ability to order and regulate itself on a scale unknown since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The vision and forward-thinking on the part of those two professors was profound and is the base that underpins our continued vitality today.

For our students, we are pleased to offer a variety of courses dealing with the internet, privacy, intellectual property and e-commerce. We continue our interdisciplinary work with our partners in the Faculties of Computer Science and Management and enjoy the cross-fertilization of ideas with colleagues and students from those areas. Our faculty members are actively involved in applied research and various initiatives in their respective fields of expertise. They also write and edit major Canadian IT law publications such as the Canadian Journal of Law & Technology. We strive to serve the community by serving as a forum for cutting-edge speakers on law and technology topics.

Our website will be undergoing a major overhaul in the Fall of 2012, but for now please browse through our pages and see our work. You can feel free to contact me at any time at robert.currie@dal.ca, or to drop by my office in Room 424 of the Weldon Law Building.
